Cultivation of Ideas

I’ve often browsed the internet and found articles where aspiring writers ask the question—how do you keep coming up with ideas? The easy answer—keep your eyes open!

Yesterday was an easy day for me. I gave myself a light work load for a Friday. While flipping through channels, I ran across the History Channel. I was just in time for the program  Ancient Aliens.  The episode was about the Mysteries of the Sphinx. The theory purported that aliens were responsible for building the Sphinx. A lightbulb went off in my head, I grabbed a notebook, and watched. Lots of great information leading to future story ideas.

In a nutshell, there aren’t any new ideas for writers, but there are new ways to spin them. As a storyteller you have to embrace your interests and find ways to marry those with a story that may have been told over and over again.

For instance, what if you write mysteries but you have a love for science fiction? What’s wrong with a mystery in space? Can you imagine a Jack Ripper character attacking a space colony?

Ideas can be found in all sorts of things. It’s just a matter of keeping your eyes and mind open.
